Iron Horses take us to the kilns

These "beehive" shaped, stone and mortar, buildings were used to manufacture charcoal briquettes. The pioneers fed Pinion Pine trees into the 30' diameter by 25' height interior and let them burn for five days. They cooled for 6 days and then they had charcoal for the smelting of metals from the mines.

Here are my two riding buddies and a park ranger after having arrived at the charcoal kilns. on the left is Kent Johnson and Ted Sudtell on the right.

Sorry about the shadow, Ted, and Kent is
in complete shadow at the picnic table.

Here, we have decided to take a break for some lunch
before heading on up to the charcoal kilns.

The 'iron horses' are waiting patiently to be ridden again.
