The holes in the brick were for venting.
This brick was manufactured on the East Coast, shipped around South America, brought into the San Francisco harbor, then freighted to this area by train, truck and finally mules.
Cheaper brick from the Los Angeles area proved to be of such poor quality and it wasn't well suited to the production of Mercury, since the L.A. brick actually tended to absorb the mercury!
